Burke’s Karate Academy Still Standing Strong

In the Tallahassee community, there’s a special place where kids and adults learn more than just kicks and punches.

It’s Burke’s Karate Academy and it has been helping people grow stronger inside and out for over 45 years.

Located near the intersection of Capital Circle NE and Mahan Dr., the academy is run by Russell Burke, who opened it in 1981 to help others the same way martial arts helped him.

Burke was raised by a single mother. When he was a kid, he was bullied a lot. But everything changed when he found martial arts. It gave him strength, confidenceand a way to protect himself.

“I love teaching the students,” Burke said with a smile. “It gives them a start at learning to respect others and themselves.”

He believes that the dojo is more than just a place to learn karate. It’s a place where people grow into better versions of themselves.

Burke takes pride in keeping the dojo clean, safe and welcoming. He wants everyone who walks in to feel at home.

When asked what he gets out of running the Dojo, Burke says, “Patience and respect.”

He also sees how much his students grow. They become more confident, focused and kinder to others.

The Dojo is also connected to the local colleges, Florida State University (FSU) and Florida A&M University (FAMU). Over the years, Burke has taught self-defense seminars at the local schools and hosted outdoor sessions for his students.

Makena Parker, one of the instructors at the dojo, says that Burke has helped many students become more confident.

“He teaches them how to be well-spoken and respectful in their everyday lives,” she said. “Karate gives you the tools to respect yourself and others.”

Master Burke’s Dojo, students learn martial arts. They learn life lessons that stay with them forever. They learn how to stand tall, speak clearly, and treat others with kindness. It’s not just about fighting it’s about becoming a better person.

For anyone looking for a place to grow, learn and feel strong, Master Burke’s Dojo is the perfect place to start.

The energy at Burke’s Academy is on full display when the members are looking to showcase their skills and techniques. A normal day begins with stretching and discipline exercises. By the end of the day, students can usually expect to do some light sparring with one another.

For teaching, Burke and Parker both emphasized the importance of respect, that they want students to show in and outside of the academy.

“Karate isn’t just using your body. A lot of it comes from your mind,” Parker said.”
